Credit where it is due to Dr. Felicity Bender and the team at Archway Dental in Cornwall for responding to the recent demise of Smile Direct Club. A friend sent me this overnight:

Full marks Archway, for marketing and for making a difference to those who may have been stranded.
There was a healthy debate at the end of the week on my own WhatsApp Group for members of The Extreme Business 100 community about "whether to take on Smile Direct Club patients."
This from an MOrth:
"I think you have to take them on as new cases - do a new treatment plan and records. Don’t supervise the use of their smile direct aligners and start again with Invisalign or other appliances."
And from a Practice Manager:
"If a patient moved from London to Newcastle how would you treat them?
You don’t take responsibility for previous work.
So it’s the same with SDC or overseas dentistry.
Assess the patient, treatment plan and treat accordingly."
I have one caveat with all of this, even though I applaud the initiative from Archway.
Why did the abandoned SDC patients choose that route in the first place?
Be careful.
