Building a stronger future for independent dental practice

Today, I walk into The Campbell Academy for the first time as Director of Business Education, and I do so with a deep sense of responsibility.


This is not about a title. It is about a task.


Colin Campbell and I share a belief that the future of independent dentistry will be shaped not only by clinical excellence, but by the quality of leadership, judgement and business education available to practice owners.


Over many years, I have worked with dentists who are exceptional clinicians and deeply committed to patient care. Yet one truth keeps repeating itself: great dentistry on its own does not guarantee a great business.


Without clarity of purpose, financial discipline, strong systems, confident leadership and a coherent plan, even the best people can become trapped in businesses that rely too heavily on personal effort and too little on structure.


That is why this next chapter matters.


The Campbell Academy has already earned its place as one of the most respected centres of clinical education in dentistry. The opportunity now is to build a business education offering that matches those standards: thoughtful, practical, rigorous and relevant to the real lives of independent practice owners.


What excites me most is not expansion for its own sake. It is the possibility of creating something genuinely useful for the profession.


Colin and I are aligned on that point. We do not want to add more noise to dentistry. We want to add more substance. We want to help owners think more clearly, lead more effectively and build practices that are profitable, resilient and less dependent on constant sacrifice from the people at the top.


That matters far beyond the balance sheet.


Independent practice still matters enormously. It matters to communities, to teams, and to patients who value continuity, accountability and care shaped by local leadership. If owners are better equipped to run strong businesses, they are better equipped to preserve that independence in a changing world.


When practice owners receive better business education, they make better decisions. When they make better decisions, teams are more stable, cultures are stronger and patients experience the benefits. Better-led practices create better places to work and better places to be treated. In that sense, business education is not separate from the health of the profession. It is one of the foundations of it.


So today feels significant.


Not because of position or prestige, but because of possibility.


The chance to help build a serious home for business education within dentistry. A place where clinical ambition and commercial understanding can sit side by side. A place that supports owners at every stage, from early growth to scale, succession and exit. A place grounded in standards, experience and service.


Important work like that will not be built quickly, and it should not be. It will require careful thinking, disciplined execution and a long-term view. But that is precisely why I am excited.
