We are hearing a lot about "workers' rights" since the Election result, the reality of which has been revealed in the King's Speech and proposed legislation.
Much of what is to come had already been covered by Sarah Buxton in the workshops she delivered to The Extreme Business 100 in Q2 of this year and, more recently, in the free webinar she and I ran on 11th July.
It can be summarised as a more challenging landscape for Employers, which it seems can only lead them to become much more careful before they hire new or manage existing team members.
That, of course, is counter-intuitive in a challenging recruitment landscape.
Harder to find people, harder to keep people, harder to employ them, harder to satisfy their wage demands and now, harder to deal with their performance and behaviour issues.
Blimey.
So you have to face the challenge head on. It's time to revisit "Leadership and Management".
I had a smashing email this week from Sonya Hamill at The L.S. Browne Centre in Fermanagh (a trusted friend and client).
In reality, I was copied on an email that she sent to senior team members who work in the centre and are living through a period of rapid change:
"If you don't listen to the Patrick Lencioni podcast 'At the Table', I highly recommend it.
Last night on the way home we listened to the episode 'Change is easy, transition is hard' and it rang very true.
In it he talks about how everyone enjoys change, but they hate the transition towards it.Â
Sometimes to the point that even when we know a change is good for us, or even necessary, we will still choose to put it off rather than face the period of transition it requires.
The transition is almost always messy, painful, uncomfortable, embarrassing, awkward, infuriating, hard, and requires taking knocks, vulnerability and getting out of your comfort zone.Â
You can doubt yourself, you can doubt the purpose, you doubt whether you should have ever started. But it's just part of what we have to go through, and we are all going through it.
So here we are. But I have zero doubts about the purpose and how this will benefit all of us, and we are already see the improvements.
I highly recommend his podcasts. They are short, straight to the point, and perfect for a car journey to or from work."
Thank you Sonya - and considering what the Government are about to unleash on Employers, perhaps a good listen for all?
