Well‑Led Isn’t Just a CQC Buzzword – It’s What Makes Great Dentistry Happen

A guest blog by Mark Topley

You’ll often hear “Well‑Led” bandied around by the CQC. It doesn’t feel sexy—it’s not clinical KPI or new kit. But lately, it matters more. Not because the CQC suddenly changed everything… but because how we lead has shifted under their microscope.

They’re still looking at vision, values, governance, culture—and leadership capacity. But now? There’s a stronger lean towards things like sustainability, purpose and clarity of vision. It’s no longer enough to have a tidy paperwork trail. The CQC wants to know whether your practice’s leadership makes it a place people want to work and patients want to be. That matters.

So. How do you show up as truly “well‑led”… without turning your diary into extra inspections prep?

1. Vision – Make it your everyday talk

Vision isn’t a statement for your website. It’s a foundation, a filter, a set of decisions.

Ask your team: “What are we here to do together?” If you hear five different answers, that’s a problem. Because when clarity is missing, stress seeps in—and patients notice.

What you can do today:

  • Start your next huddle by revisiting your vision.

  • Ask two teammates what it means.

  • Refocus and refine with one clarifying sentence everyone suggests.

2. Purpose – Stories > metrics

Purpose isn’t ‘what’ you do, it’s why you do it.

Patients and team members alike connect with stories—not spreadsheets. When you let them hear “this is why it matters”, something shifts.

Try this:

In your next morning meeting, share a patient story. Not a complaint. A win, a breakthrough, a thank-you. Keep it human.

3. Values – Live them, don’t list them

Values are not words on a plaque. They’re behaviour in action.

Pick one value per month—say “respect” or “integrity”. Ask the team: how did we show that this week? Use it in praise, in feedback, in decisions. And then ask what it looks like in practice. Create a list. Keep adding to it.

4. Sustainability – Beyond recycling bins

Here’s the newer focus area: sustainability. But not just as an environmental add-on—CQC expects financial health, staff wellbeing and effective systems. It all counts.

Ask: If today’s pace keeps up for the next three years—will we still thrive? If your answer isn’t a definitive “yes”, start fixing it—now.

Do this weekly:

Run a mini “wellbeing check” in team meetings. Ask one question like, “What’s one challenge that’s wearing you down right now?”

5. Culture – It’s clinical safety

Culture isn’t soft. It’s clinical safety.

A practice where people feel unsafe speaking up? That’s risky—for staff and for patients.

Try a simple “Keep‑Stop‑Start” session. It helps reduce habitual issues—communication snags, teamwork blind spots, hidden friction.

So why now?

Because CQC’s interest in Well‑Led isn’t soft. It’s practical. They know practices with purpose, stability, trust—as a team—deliver better care. And that’s what a great dental business looks like in 2025.

Your next move

You don't need a big budget or to game the inspection. Just smart 'human work'.

Take one of the five above. Do one small thing today. See what happens.

The Well-Led framework really is fundamental to practice success, not just a CQC checkbox. I've found that when leadership vision is clear, everything else falls into place-patient satisfaction, team morale, and even profitability.

Speaking of creativity in leadership, I've been playing Infinite Craft lately where combining different elements creates unexpected results-much like how combining good leadership elements creates exceptional practices!
