The simple phrase that builds culture — and allows the wrong people to move on

Why “That’s Not The [Your Practice Name] Way” Might Be The Only Line You Ever Need As A Leader
Why “That’s Not The [Your Practice Name] Way” Might Be The Only Line You Ever Need As A Leader

There's a phrase that Dr. Mike Hesketh, co-founder of Dartmoor Dental, uses on our Extreme Business workshops, when describing how he deals with performance or behavioural issues amongst the teams he has built in dentistry:

"That's not The Dartmoor Way."

It is so stunningly simple that it takes while to sink in.

"I want to drop a day week."

"I want a pay rise NOW."

"I don't want to do that."

"I don't want to work with......."

"That's not The Dartmoor Way."

Nothing else needs to be said after that.

And, of course, if the recipient tells you that you can shove your "Dartmoor Way" where it fits....

Well that's just fine - because now they can exercise their right to leave.

Coaching tip(s):

  1. Replace the word Dartmoor with the name of your business;

  2. Make sure your way is documented and shared;

  3. Enforce your Way - no exceptions.
