How my life has progressed over the last 50 years (or "how I became a typist")

1974 - arrive in office, open letters, go and get files out of filing cabinets, make telephone calls, dictate replies to letters into tape deck, take tape and files into typing pool, proofread letters later that day, remove carbon copy and add to file, sign and send letters, go and put files back into filing cabinets, use franking machine to pay for postage, take letters to post box. No task list.

1984 - arrive in office, open letters, go and get files out of filing cabinets, dictate replies into mini-tapes, make telephone calls, take tape and files into typing pool, proofread letters later that day, add photocopy to file, sign and send letters, respond to and send faxes, go and put files back into filing cabinets, use franking machine to pay for postage, take letters to post box. Tasks written in a page a day diary.

1994 - arrive in office, open letters, go and get files out of filing cabinets, dictate replies into digital dictation machine, take tape and files into typing pool, make telephone calls, proofread letters later that day, add photocopy to file, sign and send letters, respond to and send faxes, go and put files back into filing cabinets, use franking machine to pay for postage, take letters to post box. Use DOS-based financial planning software to generate client reports. Tasks written in a Franklin Covey Planner.

2004 - arrive in office, open emails, reply to emails by typing on my own keyboard, voicemail and text messages, make telephone calls, handle some paperwork. Tasks written in a Franklin Covey Planner.

2014 - arrive in office, open and respond to emails, text messages, SMS, social media posts on a variety of channels by typing on my own keyboard, the occasional letter - respond. Tasks in a cloud-based application.

2024 - maybe I'll be at my office today, maybe I'll be travelling.

Either way I'll engage with our tech stack:

  • Emails;

  • Slack;

  • WhatsApp;

  • Messenger;

  • Todoist;

  • iCal;

  • Zoom;

  • Fathom;

  • Loom.

To navigate my way through the day.

By typing on my own keyboard.
