February’s Dental Dilemma: While Others Chase UDA Targets, Will You Seize the Private Practice Advantage?"**

As we enter February, I feel sorry for those Owners and Managers who have to add "chasing UDA targets" to their task list.

Ironic, isn't it, that in a world where private associates are reluctant to accept targets for days worked and average daily production (because it might prejudice my self-employed status) - that the Government have had them woking to targets for over 20 years?

I remember my days as an employee of Integrated Dental Holdings (2008-2010) when, as Director of Private Sector Development, I couldn't get anything approved by the Board between 1st January and 31st March, because all hands were on deck, chasing those NHS targets.

That, of course, in the aftermath of a banking collapse and a change of Ownership for the parent company - we thought we were hard done to.

It appears that nothing much has changed - PCTs may have become ICBs and more DCPs may be doing the delivery - but I'll be willing to bet that it's the same race for the finish line, whether you are a corporate, a group or a smaller independent

Which means that, in the meantime, the independent, owner-managed private practice has an opportunity to get the pedal to the metal on internal, inbound and external marketing.

If you are in private practice, do you plan to use the next two months to send as many messages out as possible, to your existing patients, to say that if they have family, friends or colleagues who are struggling to get into or get seen by their NHS provider - that you have capacity?

"We must take the current when it serves - or lose our ventures." So said Caesar.
