One room, many countries, shared dental challenges

Yesterday I had the privilege of attending The Campbell Academy Dental Entrepreneur Bootcamp as a lecturer, and it proved to be one of those occasions that reminds us just how connected the independent dental profession has become.

In the room were delegates not only from the United Kingdom, but also from Latvia, Prague and Kyiv.

Different countries, different cultures, different economic and political realities and yet, when the conversations began, the themes were remarkably familiar.

Wherever they had travelled from, these practice owners and clinicians were wrestling with the same questions: how to create a better patient experience, how to build reliable systems, how to market ethically and effectively, how to manage cash flow, and how to lead teams with clarity and consistency.

My own contribution to the programme focused on the patient journey, with particular reference to the use of AI-driven technology to help generate modern treatment plans for patients.

It was clear, however, that this is only one part of a much bigger picture.

Over the course of their week at the bootcamp, these delegates will also be exploring the essential business disciplines that underpin a successful practice: financial management, marketing, patient experience, digital workflow, and the leadership and management of teams.

What made the day especially humbling was meeting a principal from Kyiv who is running a substantial dental business in the midst of war. It was a sobering reminder that, in our own jurisdiction, the pressures we face each day are real enough, but they pale beside the challenges being faced elsewhere.

My admiration for every delegate in that room is immense, and my gratitude for the opportunity to meet and speak with them is equally so.

They left me encouraged that independent dentistry, at its best, is resilient, ambitious and deeply human by nature.
