Would You Trust a Moody Calculator?

You are my assistant.

I ask you to perform a mathematical calculation for me......

" will you multiply 723 by 256 please."

You reach for a calculator.....

I stop you with.....

"I'm paying YOU to do that, not your calculator."

Sounds pretty stupid eh?

Actually, you could sit down with pen and paper, "do the math" and get the right answer eventually.

It would just take longer and isn't the best use of your time.

That's what the calculator is for. Saving time - period.

But your calculator is moody.

Suppose the calculator gives you the following answer:

  • first attempt - 10,000

That's just plain wrong.

Imagine if you could challenge your calculator and it responded with "Oh - yes - that's wrong - silly me - hang on and I'll do it again." No apology.

  • second attempt - In the region of 180,000

Close, but not close enough - you challenge again and get a second apology and a third attempt...

  • 185,088

Is the correct answer. You just had to be careful using this calculator, as it can have off-days.

And so we come to AI.

It's just a calculator - and it has off days.

  1. It saves lots of time;

  2. It sometimes gets things completely wrong (and never sincerely apologises);

  3. It sometimes generalises;

  4. It most often gets things right.

You just need to check.

Question is - if you had a moody calculator, would you trust it?

No - you would trust your own judgement.

Same with AI.

It really is an amazing time saver - but it's just a moody calculator in your pocket/bag or on your desk.

Rubbish in - rubbish out.

And on the off days.....

Quality in - rubbish out.

So be careful. But don't be shy.
