Thinking Business

Have you achieved everything you possibly can in your work? I don't think so.

An interesting question from a member of the Extreme Business community who attended our workshop in Birmingham last Friday.

She was asking how to handle a response from a team member who suggested that she wasn't particularly interested in receiving any additional training on the job (because she felt that she had achieved everything that she was capable of in her career and responsibilities).

I asked my client to answer a very simple question:

"If you think back to the day-to-day work that you were doing both clinically and in your business three years ago, how does that compare to the day-to-day work you are doing today?"

She replied that her work had changed significantly, both as a result of the further implementation of digital clinical workflow and also the impact of AI-driven business systems on the day-to-day operation of the clinic.

I then further asked whether, three years ago, she could have predicted those changes — and, predictably, the answer was a very firm "no".

With that in mind, I went on to suggest that if I asked her to imagine her clinical and administrative workflow three years in the future, the chances are that, like the rest of us, it would be impossible for her to predict what life would look like in just 36 months.

So the next time any member of your team suggests that they have achieved everything that they are capable of - simply point out that it is impossible for any of us to predict where we're going to be three years from now.

All that we can do is strap in and enjoy the ride.
