What you really need to talk about at your monthly management meeting

Later today I’m off to West Yorkshire to facilitate the first monthly management meeting with a new client and his management team (after, I suspect, a few moments of celebration for the Huddersfield Town result on Monday).

When you’ve been doing the job as long as I have, it’s easy to take certain things for granted – such as the agenda for the meeting.

When the new client emails you a few days beforehand to ask what we will be talking about – it’s a timely reminder that sometimes the obvious isn’t so obvious.

Which prompted me to include a copy of my standard monthly management meeting agenda as a free download with this post.

You may want to print a copy of this and compare the items we will be covering with those you focus on at present.

This is what I do with my clients at our monthly meetings.

Can I also observe that, in a 3-hour meeting (no meetings should ever last longer) it is unlikely that we will get through the whole agenda, preferring to highlight the “hot spots” at each meeting.

It is equally important to take a leaf out of the Stephen Covey time management book “First Things First” and focus on that which is important but not urgent rather than the important and urgent items.

There is ALWAYS a list of the urgent stuff and that can be better accommodated in day to day tactical work. The purpose of your monthly management meeting is to focus on the important but not urgent – because that’s the work that will generate your future profits.

I’m looking forward to beginning the journey with a new team today and hopeful that I make myself obsolete in the shortest time possible, leaving them to continue the habit when I’m gone.
