THINKING BUSINESS
a blog by Chris Barrow

What's going well?

Yesterday's post was intended to comment on the positivity at last week's dental trade show.

Thursday was day 1 of 2 at our Birmingham client workshops (4 of 7 locations) and I began the day, as always, by asking my clients to reflect upon their "wins" over the last 3 months.

Here's what they said:

  • A substantial number of them have once more commenced their charitable activities and are fulfilling their corporate social responsibility and cementing their team by supporting good causes;

  • Many are actively and enthusiastically using social media for recruitment of team and clinicians;

  • The role of the dental therapist is being promoted to the fullest extent of their GDC scope of practice;

  • New teams are forming as old team members leave - this recruitment cycle is proving an opportunity to clear out the dead wood and replace with new saplings;

  • My clients are investing in either their first, second or third intraoral scanner (and learning how to use them properly in front of the patient);

  • Communication remains the key to successful teamwork - daily huddles, weekly reviews, monthly management meetings and quarterly Personal Progress Interviews and training sessions;

  • There is a real sense of PURPOSE to be communicated to all team members - where are we going, how are we going to get there and what's in it for you.

Combine trade shows and workshops and my own spirit is high. Ironic that I'd be spending most of today's Owner's meeting on planning their exit strategy.

Remember, once more, the wise words of Michael Gerber:

  • Objective - make a profit;

  • Purpose - solve the patient's problem;

  • Goal - sell the business.

In the meantime - success isn't the destination, it's the journey.

Let's enjoy the journey.

p.s. Forgive me rattling the charity bucket myself - last chance - I'm riding 100km on Sunday to raise funds for Dementia UK and Bridge2Aid. If you can make any donation it will make a positive difference to someone's life:
