THINKING BUSINESS
a blog by Chris Barrow

Outside the box

I’m always interested in businesses and individuals who “tear up the rule book” and innovate. Michael Joseph is a very interesting young man – I probably identify with his attitude to tradition – in that he wants to change things for the better – for himself, of course, but also for the clients he works with. His first laboratory, Bite-Rite, based in Golders Green, London was innovative in that Michael opened the lab well before tradition would have said he had the experience – and yet he has built a good reputation for himself and his team in the provision of private lab work. His second laboratory, Maxi-Dent, (just a few yards away from the first) is really breaking down barriers, by importing NHS and private lab work from China. You may well argue that this idea is not a new one – agreed – but I’m impressed that Michael:

  1. took himself out to China solo to research the market

  2. negotiated a JV deal with a Chinese company and

  3. has invested hugely in launching the business into the UK market – with record results in a very short space of time

His timing is perfect and, speaking to him about his attitude to those “traditionalists” that think that Chinese labs are “not British” is refreshingly Marmite! I’m not on commission here – but you do need to take a look at his website. There is another dimension to this blog post though. During a recent conversation over coffee in NW London, I asked Michael how he intended to positively differentiate his lab from ‘all the others’. His reply was a pleasant surprise. “You know Chris, there is little point in going to see a dentist and asking him to switch lab from one to another – the dentist doesn’t grow. I’m interested in helping dentists to grow their business and then asking them to place a proportion of the increase with my lab(s).” With that in mind, Michael is looking to recruit a Practice Development Manager and has asked me to use our social media channels as part of that process. In simple terms, he is looking for an existing practice manager or other team member, with a good track record/an interest in on business development, who would like to be part of the Maxi-Dent/Bite-Rite payroll, with a mission to visit supporting practices and work with the owners and managers on marketing, the patient journey and other business improvement ideas – a bit like a business coach – but for free! The job is based in NW London. You may ask why am I broadcasting this offer – don’t BKH charge for coaching services? Yes we do – but there is plenty of business to go around and Michael’s service will be at the ‘beginners level’ for those dentists who need help but might feel they cannot afford to pull in the big guns. I think thats a great idea – and if you know of anyone who might be looking for a change, please contact Michael on michael@bite-rite.co.uk We need more innovators in the world – this man is one of them.
