THINKING BUSINESS

Inspire me, inspire someone

How much more bad news can there be? Driving from home to Bury this morning at 06:30 and listening to Radio 4. Greek debt. The NHS reforms. The tragic loss of a passionate teacher. The tobacco industry versus the anti-smoking league. Murdoch back with a ‘Sun on Sunday’ when Sun reporters have been arrested for bribing officials. Easy to develop that Monday morning feeling – even before you start your own life! It was August 2008 that the banks collapsed (I remember calling David Hudaly from holiday to ask if I still had a job at IDH after Merrill Lynch went bust). Since then, its just been bad news. Every day – day in, day out. A client writes to me over the weekend, asking me to steer away from doom and gloom at an upcoming Study Club meeting. “I guess I don’t want them scared about the impending doom, potential collapse of their independent practice, rise of the corporates, and slashing of their percentages.” He is absolutely right. It really is time to stop complaining and start focusing on what can be made to work. Personal tragedies occur and they deserve our sympathies. Macro-economically, the situation is gloomy and we must be realists. But I have no energy for those who (as Covey says) criticise, condemn and complain. On a personal level, we have a responsibility to inspire those around us. Last week I met inspirational telephonists, receptionists, nurses, practice managers, associates, treatment co-ordinators, hygienists, therapists, principals, specialists – even restaurant managers! Leadership – is what we all need. Someone who shows that they care – every day. Someone to tell us there is a way and there is a future. Someone to demonstrate real answers and show real examples of success. Someone to show us the way and ask “will you follow me?” I want leadership – I crave it. I want to demonstrate leadership every day. I have limitless time and energy for those who inspire and I have unlimited desire to lead.
