Interview questions
I spoke with a client yesterday who is about to interview for a hygienist and he was asking me for some help on appropriate questions.
My experience is that business-owners usually spend 80% of the interview extolling the wonderful history and virtues of their own business and 20% of the time actually asking the candidate about themselves.
Sometimes they are so desperate to “fill the gap” in their team that anybody will “do” - only to find 12 weeks later that the individual was good at interviews but not good at the job - or at being a member of the team.
So let’s reverse the ratios.
I want you to invest 80% of your time in asking the following:
- Tell me about your professional/career life to date;
- Tell me what you liked best about each place you worked and what you liked least;
- Why did you move on?
- Tell me about achievements in your personal life;
- Tell me “what makes you tick” - why and when do you get motivated?
- Tell me about your professional 3-year vision;
- Tell me what you are like as a team player;
- Tell me what skills you will bring;
- Tell me why I should offer you this job.
There’s a list to get started with.
Please keep the “let me tell you about our wonderful business” to a minimum.
And for those who are shortlisted - make sure you invest $50 in a Kolbe profile.

david ward | October 17, 2008Hi Chris
patient asked me on recent introduction to my replacement dentist- has he done a check up on you?
What a great idea! A hands on clinical interview! Tests clinical skills, temperament, reporting skills, marketing skills. I am being examined tomorrow by an asociate applicant. I will tell you what happens.
