Am I missing something?

Or does the idea of “reading a book” on a hand-held device seem like a sin?
Who could possibly want to replace the primeval pleasure of holding a hard-back, smelling the clean crisp publication and parting those pages for the first time?
Reading is a tactile experience - what are Sony thinking?

Adrian Stewart | July 25, 2008On reading your description, I think ’sensual’ applies more than tactile but I agree whole-heartedly. I always imagine that the people who employ these devices read with their mouths open and a little bit of drool emerging over their lower lip.

Neil Harris | July 25, 2008I think school kids would love it! Far better than lugging a huge rucksack to school every day. And when Sony have the kids hooked it will follow them into adult life.
Personally I love reading real books and cannot see how I would gain pleasure from this. I must be turning into an old technophobe!!
Hi Chris, Your thoughts are my first thoughts. There is the obvious
Simon Reilly | July 25, 2008Hi Chris,
Your thoughts are my first thoughts.
There is the obvious bit that Sony & Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Indigo and Chapters can flog us a lot more e-books not to mention that one can download them while being stuck on the road in some hell hole of a hotel.
Then again, while I appreciate your “primeval pleasure of holding a hard-back, smelling the clean crisp publication and parting those pages for the first time” …
There is something to be said about the value of dog earring the book pages and underlining key ideas for future reference.
At the same time I’m not so sure how the hand held devise will stand up to having spilt tea on it along with crumbs and strawberry jamb.
Hats off to you for the quality, variety and volume of reading that you do and may Fahrenheit 451 never come to pass.
Simon
The people who buy this will be same as those
julian | July 27, 2008The people who buy this will be same as those who send text messages instead of phoning up for a chat, or those who send a thank you email instead of writing a card. Hang on thats me! and you i guess? Surley you can see the benifit in carrying a small electronic devise instead of 5 or 6 books on holiday? and think of the advantage of being able to down load a new book in your hotel room when you finish an old one, instead of having to go out in the rain to a book shop. Are you just upset that you cant down load books onto your iPhone? I say give me an electronic tablet that i can read books on, watch films on, search the internet on and send emails from any day. I just wish they would bring out a charger that will fit all my electronic gadgets!!

It isn’t that books are dead - it’s that there are other ways of doing similar things. (Make the most of the choice - while it’s still there).
